Daniel Garcia June 24, 2016 Social Problems Fieldwork Paper Professor Brita Andercheck Reflection on Domestic Violence’s Intersection with Various Social Problems PennyWise is a resale store affiliated with the Fort Bend Women’s Center in Sugar Land, TX. This organization works to advocate and provide resources for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. Their mission statement is: The Fort Bend Women’s Center empowers survivors of domestic or sexual violence and their children to achieve safety, heal and begin a new independent and self-sufficient life, while also striving to prevent violence against women (Fort Bend). Volunteers for the Fort Bend Women’s Center fulfill a number of roles in their retail store, PennyWise. In my service, I worked to help the staff organize and sort the various donations that they received that were inundating their warehouse. Working with PennyWise exposed me to an entirely different perspective than I was previously familiar with as I have always been insulated away from people in such a situation. I found that the employees, women who were victims of domestic violence trying to get back on their feet again, faced an array social problems that severely affected every aspect of their lives. Several of the most notable social problems that I observed intersecting with domestic violence were poverty/class inequality, gender, and race. Youth Justice in Canada Juvenile or youth crime has become a controversial issue in the politics of Canada because of the huge disagreements regarding how the youths should be treated in the criminal system despite of the fact that youth crime in the country is lamentable. The controversy is mainly centered on the best and most suitable approach taken to handle the youth criminals and the severity of the punishment that should be given (Makarenko, 2007). In addition to generating concerns and dominating Canada politics, youth crime has also attracted huge concerns by many Canadians, especially violent youth crime. According to some statistics, youth crime has continued to increase despite reports by the police that offenses committed by people between 12 and 17 years have declined. In 2010, the overall juvenile crime rate declined by 7 percent relative to 2009 while violent crime dropped by 3 percent within the same period. The Youth Criminal Justice Act has contributed to numerous changes in youth justice in Canada including decrease in the rate of youth crime, changes in the way the society responds to young people, and development of humane and respectful ways of dealing with the youth. Meditation Essay Summary The Transcendental Meditation technique is a simple, natural, effortless procedure practiced for any amount of time, usually 10-20 minutes in the morning and evening, while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. Now a person of the opposite sex is playing the guitar. Relax and become a part of this song that he or she is playing. Let yourself feel the situation. Sorry to take you out of this Transcendental Consciousness state. This is one of the major benefits of Transcendental Meditation, you allow yourself to feel the situation you are put into. When you meditate on your own you can put yourself into any situation that you wish. That is a major reason why meditation is so easy, relaxing, and benificial.
